«The “Judgment” of the Jewish Annotated New Testament»

• «The “Judgment” of the Jewish Annotated New Testament and Contextual Theology», Gregorianum 101/3 (2020) 517-526.(PDF, 807 KB)On 28 March 2019, the Jewish Annotated New Testament (Oxford University Press, 2011; 2nd ed. 2017) was presented at the Pontifical Gregorian University. The work consists of a commentary on the New Testament (NT) by Jewish scholars, together with an appendix containing brief essays that explain various aspects of the NT’s original context, as well as essays examining the reception of certain aspects of the NT in modern and contemporary Judaism. According to its editors, Marc Zvi Brettler and Amy-Jill Levine, the work, hereafter abbreviated as JANT, is intended for three main readerships: 1) Christians interested in the Jewish background of the NT; 2) Jews who are not familiar with the NT; and 3) readers interested in approaching the NT within its original Jewish matrix. The following pages offer a reading of a text concerning judgment in the Fourth Gospel (John 5), drawing on notes and references to JANT. By focusing on this passage and on the theme of judgment, together with other themes present in the text and recurring throughout the Fourth Gospel—such as the Sabbath, Jewish festivals, eschatology, and the term Ioudaioi—the discussion seeks to demonstrate the usefulness and advantages of JANT, particularly for Christians interested in the Jewish background of the NT and, more specifically, for those seeking a better understanding of the NT’s theological message concerning judgment. It will further be argued that JANT helps to bring to light the original context of the NT, a context that is essential for the development of contextual theology and for renewing theology.
