Readings in the Gospel of John
Prof. Pino di Luccio and Dr. Yakir Paz
This joint course, offered by the Hebrew University and the Pontifical Biblical Institute, is held every Thursday during the first semester. It provides a close reading of the Gospel of John in the original Greek. Emphasis will be placed on John’s linguistic style, theological themes, and literary structure. The course will explore Johannine sources, compare the narrative and theology of John with the Synoptic Gospels, and examine the historical and cultural context of its composition – including its relation to Jewish and Rabbinic traditions. Students will read through the entire Gospel, focusing on in-depth discussion of selected key passages.
By the end of the course, students will have developed a working familiarity with the Gospel of John in Greek, alongside a solid grasp of key scholarly debates and interpretive issues surrounding the text. Students will also gain proficiency in using essential research tools, including Greek lexicons, critical apparatuses, and scholarly commentaries
